The Therapeutic Massage Course is divided into 5 full weekend components; the first weekend starting with a Friday evening class.

  • The scope of this course
  • Explanation and brief history of Therapeutic Massage
  • Eastern v Western approaches to Massage
  • Contraindications and Cautions for Massage
  • Environmental preparation for Massage (incl. table preparation)
  • Selection of lubricants - oils, waxes and creams
  • Self preparation for Massage
  • Stretching
  • Practitioner posture and movement (biomechanics)
  • Client preparation for Massage
  • Introduction to Anatomical terms & positions
  • The Massage strokes: - Effleurage; Petrissage; Longitudinal Stroking (Gliding)
  • Massage sequence for Back, Neck & Shoulders.

2nd Weekend

  • Introduction to the concept of body systems
  • Introductory Anatomy & Physiology of body systems
  • Introduction to the concept of assessment skills
  • Introduction to the concept of Range of Motion (ROM) testing
  • Introduction to Deep Tissue Massage 
  • When and why do we do Deep Tissue Massage
  • Introduction to the concept of Body-Mind and Psycho-emotional holding patterns
  • The concept of Adhesions & Scar Tissue
  • Massage strokes - repeating everything from the 1st weekend plus Slow Deep Longitudinal Strokes (SDLS), Ischaemic Compressions, Pincering
  • Massage sequence for Back, Neck, Shoulders (including Deep Tissue into Trapezius & Neck)
  • Massage sequence for Posterior Legs and Feet.


3rd Weekend

  • Continuing introductory Anatomy & Physiology of body systems
  • Review of Range of Motion testing
  • Review of anatomical terms and positions
  • Principles and protocols of Deep Tissue Massage
  • Phases of Soft Tissue injury repair
  • Massage sequence for Arms, Shoulders and Hands
  • Massage sequence for Anterior Legs

4th Weekend

  • Introduction to communication skills (rapport, open questions, reflective listening)
  • Continuing introductory Anatomy & Physiology of body systems
  • Introduction to the concept and technique of Myofascial Release (Myofascial Stretching, Petrissage Squeezing, Skin Rolling)
  • Repeating Massage sequence for Back, Neck and Shoulders (including safe use of forearms and elbows)
  • Massage sequence for Front Torso including Abdomen, Colonic Drainage and Chest
  • A hands-on review of some of the Massage Sequences.

5th Weekend

  • Completion of anatomy and physiology components
  • Concept of Sports Massage
  • Sports Training Cycles & phases
  • Types of Massage appropriate to each phase
  • Components of Fitness
  • Hands-on review of some of the Massage sequences
  • Further training options.
