Certificate in Therapeutic Massage (C1-18)

Each Certificate in Therapeutic Massage Course is divided into 4 full weekend components; the first weekend starting with a Friday evening class; then 4 follow up week day evening sessions.

1st Weekend

  • The scope of this course
  • Explanation and brief history of Therapeutic Massage
  • Eastern v Western approaches to Massage
  • Introduction to the concept of body systems
  • Contraindications and Cautions or Massage
  • Environmental preparation for Massage (incl. table preparation)
  • Selection of oils and creams
  • Self preparation for Massage
  • Stretching
  • Practitioner posture and movement (biomechanics)
  • Client preparation for Massage/Introduction to the concept of assessment skills
  • Introduction to Anatomical terms & positions
  • Introductory Anatomy & Physiology of body systems
  • The Massage strokes: - Effleurage; Petrissage; Longitudinal Stroking (Gliding)
  • Massage sequence for Back, Neck & Shoulders.

2nd Weekend

  • What is Deep Tissue Massage? 
  • When and why do we do Deep Tissue Massage?
  • Introduction to the concept of Body-Mind and Psycho-emotional holding patterns
  • Continuing introductory Anatomy & Physiology of body systems
  • The concept of Adhesions & Scar Tissue
  • Soft Tissue injury repair mechanisms
  • Different levels of release
  • How to do Deep Tissue Massage
  • Introduction to the concept and technique of Myofascial Release
  • Massage strokes - repeating everything from the 1st weekend plus Slow Deep Longitunindal Strokes (SDLS), Ischaemic Compressions, Pincering
  • Massage sequence for Back, Neck, Shoulders (including Deep Tissue into Trapezius & Neck), and Posterior Legs and Feet.


3rd Weekend

  • Completion of full body Massage sequence including Arms and Shoulders and Front of Legs
  • Continuing introductory Anatomy & Physiology of body systems.

4th Weekend

  • Concept of Sports Massage
  • Sports Training Cycles & phases
  • Types of Massage appropriate to each phase
  • Components of Fitness
  • Continuing introductory Anatomy & Physiology of body systems
  • Massage sequence for Front Torso - including Colonic Drainage
  • A hands-on review of most of the Massage Sequences & Massage Sequence combinations
  • Further training options.

Evening Sessions

  • Completion of theory components
  • Hands-on review of most of the Massage sequences
  • Combining Massage sequences.
