Applied Musculo-Skeletal Anatomy

An essential requirement for any treatment based bodywork, be it Advanced Treatment Massage, Bowen Technique, Ortho-Bionomy, NeuroMuscular Therapy, Kinesiology - is to thoroughly know your way around the muscles and bony landmarks of the body. This Applied Musculo-Skeletal Anatomy Course (AMSA) is designed to give you just this - at an academic and a practical level, so you will be able to easily & comfortably identify through palpation the location of all the main muscles, muscle attachments, bony landmarks, joints, & ligaments, in the human body.

It is also an ideal course for therapists/students/instructors from other modalities including - Pilates, Yoga, Alexander Technique, Feldenkrais, Acupuncture.

Extensive use is made of accelerated learning strategies, incorporating pictures, charts, anatomical videos, body drawing & palpation, full size plastic skeleton, utilising eye accessing cues and multi-sensory learning that maximises your ability to acquire a thorough & comprehensive knowledge & understanding of human musculo-skeletal anatomy.

Each session will examine a different region of the body, covering:

  • Bony landmarks & skeletal structure (incl. location & palpation)
  • Relevant ligaments
  • Skeletal muscles that act in the area, incl. origins, insertions and actions (including location & palpation)
  • Range of Motions (ROM's) of relevant joints in that area, incl. prime movers, synergists, and antagonists.

Areas studied will include:

  • Face & Cranium
  • Neck
  • Shoulder & Thoracic Spine
  • Lumbar Spine & Abdomen
  • Hip & Pelvis
  • Knee
  • Ankle & Foot
  • Elbow
  • Wrist & Hand.

In this Course you will also be introduced to the Tom Myers's concept of Anatomy Trains - Myofascial Continuities that connect lines of skeletal musculature from one end of the body to the other.
