Certificate in Therapeutic Massage
Each Certificate in Therapeutic Massage Course is divided into 3 full weekend components; the first weekend starting with a Friday evening class; then 4 follow up week day evening sessions.
1st Weekend - Introduction to Therapeutic Massage, includes:
- The scope of this course
- Explanation and brief history of Therapeutic Massage
- Eastern v Western approaches to Massage
- Introduction to the concept of body systems
- Contraindications and Cautions or Massage
- Environmental preparation for Massage (incl. table preparation)
- Selection of oils and creams
- Self preparation for Massage
- Stretching
- Practitioner posture and movement (biomechanics)
- Client preparation for Massage/Introduction to the concept of assessment skills
- Introduction to Anatomical terms & positions
- Introductory Anatomy & Physiology of body systems
- The Massage strokes: - Effleurage; Petrissage; Longitudinal Stroking (Gliding)
2nd Weekend - Intro to Deep Tissue Massage & Myofascial Release, includes:
- The Concept and Practise of Creating Rapport
- What is Deep Tissue Massage?
- When and why do we do Deep Tissue Massage?
- Introduction to the concept of Body-Mind and Psycho-emotional holding patterns
- More introductory Anatomy & Physiology of body systems
- The concept of Adhesions & Scar Tissue
- Soft Tissue injury repair mechanisms
- Different levels of Release
- How to do Deep Tissue Massage
- Introduction to the concept and technique of Myofascial release
3rd Weekend - Completion of Massage Sequence, includes:
- Completion of full body Massage sequence
- More introductory Anatomy & Physiology of body systems
- Discussions of issues arising from hands-on practise
- Introduction to the concept of boundaries and ethics when working with clients
Evening Sessions Introduction to Sports Massage, includes:
- What is Sports Massage?
- Sports Training Cycles & phases
- Types of Massage appropriate to each phase
- Therapist/Athlete relationship
- Introduction to Energy Systems for Sport
- Components of Fitness
- Introduction to PNF Stretching
- The Psycho-physiology of Stress (fight or flight response) - The Nervous System
- A hands-on review of most of the Massage Sequences
